This is turning out to be a weekend of stuff not working - 3 test beds are running fine, but the most important one is having a bit of an issue with memory compatibility. Does anyone know of a place where I can find registered DDR400 DIMMs in or around the CT area?

Hi again... Strangly, Comp-USA had a couple matched pairs of registered 512mb PC3200 DIMM's in stock 3 or 4 weeks ago *(Centon-branded I think)... Uhh...NO.the win-2s+ was a special case. something about having the buffer on the board itself or some other workaround. Opterons will continue to need registered ram for the forseeable future.
Fairly obviously a hint at a dual core opteron piece, can I request including all manner of duals in the comparison? I think the most confusion will arise for budget - mid range workstation buyers... dual core pentium vs dual single core xeons or opterons vs dual dual cores. Throw in trying to figure it out for your specific needs/apps (and specific functions of said apps) and considering price/performance could get very tricky.
actually, now that I think about it, for such a review to be truly useful, it would be so long and data-drowned no one would want to bother with it. Maybe we need an approach that begins with the software, not the hardware, since people buy workstations based around a particular pipeline. It'd be a great tool if users could select from a list of apps and narrow it down themselves...i.e...Pick 3dsmax, then chose the renderer, and see benchmarks on that particular combo.

I thought the new revision Opterons also worked with non-registered memory, at least on some motherboards.That is the case with the (discontinued) ABIT WN-2S+ at least.
